Everything You Need to Know Alberta Energy Efficiency Rebates

Energy efficiency rebates are an effective and useful way to encourage people across the province to consider their energy, water, and natural gas usage. This refers to many areas, including window replacement in Edmonton, energy-efficient furnace installation, solar energy paneling, and much more.

However, it can be difficult to know which programs are available and to track the changes made by different government agencies. This guide should serve as a reference guide for the current state of affairs as it regards energy-efficient rebates across Alberta.

Unfortunately, all residential upgrade rebates have been closed, and new applications are no longer being accepted. The only circumstances that forego these new requirements are projects that were invested in before October of 2019. This means that the common and well-known programs available to Alberta residents, such as window replacement in Edmonton, smart home upgrades, and water tank replacement are no longer available for provincial government rebates.

These programs were well-used by Albertans, to the extent that every postal code area in Alberta had made use of these rebate programs while they were active. However, it was not deemed essential or appropriate, and the program has now been closed as a result. This does not change the value of these upgrades, but it does affect the availability of the average Alberta resident.

Fortunately, the entire program will not be scrapped. The Government of Alberta has made a few changes to the program and followed the Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) program guidelines to introduce legislation. This legislation was introduced in January of 2019, and the program guidelines should pass in the first quarter of 2020. While the details are yet to be determined, there is the knowledge that it will have benefits for municipalities and businesses alike.

These rebate programs will be beneficial to all Albertans, as it will allow their workplaces the opportunity to engage in energy conservation and efficiency improvements. Since it is common knowledge that businesses produce more waste and greenhouse gas emissions than an average household, Albertans will benefit from these programs, but perhaps more indirectly than the previous program.

However, there is also hope for homeowners in regards to energy efficiency rebates. Not only has the Alberta Government promised Clean Energy Improvement Programs (CEIP), they have also encouraged municipalities to invest in their own programs following the same guidelines. This means that some cities and Albertan districts may well see the re-introduction of government rebates, and if not from the municipality, the provincial government is still using the PACE guidelines for homeowners.

In this instance though, homeowners will instead be allowed to receive their refunds and rebates immediately, and the property taxes will be reassessed the following period. This should prove beneficial to homeowners looking to make the right choice and choosing to invest in cleaner, greener alternatives.
